Physical Education
Curriculum intent
Our curriculum aims to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, and encourages students to make healthy life choices. Additionally, they will develop a broader understanding of the skills and knowledge that is needed for them to be a life-long learner in PE and sport. Students will also learn leadership skills through roles such as coaching and officiating.
Our PE curriculum provides opportunities for students to engage in competitive sport and other activities that build character, resilience, ambition, curiosity and help to embed British values such as fairness, sportsmanship and respect.
The PE curriculum gives students sufficient knowledge to make informed choices about further/higher education and employment in the highly competitive sports sector. PE is aiming to meet all relevant Gatsby benchmark standards (GB2, GB4, GB5, GB7), so that careers is embedded in our curriculum and PE staff are well equipped to advise students on their future careers.
Our broad and balanced curriculum enables learners to discover their interests and talents at KS3 and 4. Our curriculum is designed to give all learners (particularly the most disadvantaged) the knowledge, skills and cultural capital to succeed in life.
We want our students to know how to stay healthy (physically and mentally), maintain an active lifestyle, as well as giving them plenty of opportunities to be physically active during the school day for sustained periods of time and through extra-curricular activities. A number of students are also able to utilise the Gym during lessons and this provides a natural pathway to become members of a gym, thus following a healthy, active lifestyle.
