The Eastbourne Academy

French Spelling Bee

For the second year running our year 7 students are taking part in a national competition to become England’s best speller in French. The French Spelling Bee is a competition for students in Year 7 to practise and improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in French. The competition consists of four stages over the three terms with an Individual class competition, whole school competition, Regional final at University of Brighton and the National final on the 6th July at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

This year forty of our Year 7 students will represent The Eastbourne Academy in the competition. The students have received a wordlist of 50 words to learn and practise to spell (including accents!) at the first stage of the competition and a further 50 words will be added at both subsequent stages of the competition. Students will have one minute to translate and correctly spell as many words as possible.  The vocabulary is relevant to the curriculum.  For the National final words will be 2012 Olympics-related. An after school Spelling Bee Club will start in January to support the students.

The competition is sponsored by Routes into Languages and all participants will be rewarded with a certificate and a prize. For further info and practice, check out the website http://www.flspellingbee.co.uk  We wish all participants ‘Happy Spelling’!
