Regular school attendance - why it's so important

Going to school regularly is important to your child’s future. For example, children who miss school frequently can fall behind with their work and do less well in exams.

Good attendance shows potential employers that your child is reliable. Research suggests that children who attend school regularly could also be at less risk of getting involved in antisocial behaviour or crime.

Whole Academy Attendance!

As the senior teacher who oversees attendance I am delighted to say that we have reached 93% attendance since September. Despite the weather and the fact it was dark mornings and dark afternoons last term we have managed to keep our attendance up. Well done to everyone and a huge thank you for your support!

Our target is to get to 94% attendance by May half term. SOOO can I please ask for your help and support on this. If your child is in school then he/she will have the best opportunity to learn and engage with us, their teachers and the Academy. We want nothing more than your child leaving the Academy with the right qualifications, having worked really hard, and going on to their next step in life AND this starts from Year 7!

As a parent you can support your child by following some of the suggestions below. Regular and consistent attendance is proved to impact on the achievement of every child. If you child has an attendance of between 100% - 98% then they could easily meet their targets and even smash them! They will leave the Academy with good qualifications and that will open doors for them and give them choices. Once your child’s attendance starts to drop below 98% then they can start dropping grades, missing their targets by at least one whole grade. That can result in them not being able to choose which course they want to take at College, or at which level they start a job.

We want your child to leave having achieved their very best through hard work and determination and that starts with attending as much as possible.

Here are some suggestions to support your child. Try one and see if it works!

Suggestions for regular and consistent attendance.

  1. Always be in school at least 10 mins before the day starts. This will mean your child will never late! The start of a lesson is extremely important for making sure every student knows what is being studied for that lesson and why
  2. Try to get your child to pack their  bag for school the day before to avoid a panic in the morning
  3. Book any appointments, such as medical and dental appointments, when possible, outside school hours. If they are in KS3 take advantage of finishing school early; if they are in KS4 take advantage of the late start
  4. Communicate with the Academy – if your child is finding it hard to come to school, talk to us about it so we can all work together to get them back in
  5. Ask them when they get home what they did at school that day that they really enjoyed. Talk positively about school and why school is important when they are at home

Thank you all for your continued support and I hope this term is an excellent term for you and your family!
